#1. DDM Set 15 & new starter announced! by MerricB

D&D Miniatures Game Starter Set contains 5 non-random pre-painted figures, cards, 2 battle grids, and rules. Figures come from Dungeons of Dread series. $19.99 April 8, 2008

D&D Dungeons of Dread Booster Pack contains 8 random prepainted figs. $14.99 April 8, 2008

The starter set contains a Large Green Dragon, Human Sellsword, Elf Warlock, Dwarf Battlemaster, and Exiled Drow Fighter. The rules have been updated for faster play in an easy-to-reference format. The starter is in a clear blister package. No theme is given for this set, other than it will include some figures drawn from key 2008 D&D titles. The catalog contains no pictures for the D&D minis, not even cover art.

Cheers!

Large green?!

That's a bit odd... I'd have expected a reprint of a Large red at some point, but the green?!

Hrm... only 2 maps, and 5 figs, but the same price.

I assume this won't work to well with sealed ( seem to recall using War Drums starters at Winter Fantasy for some sealed event, but maybe I'm forgetting how we did that (the Sunday event...).

faster streamlined rules?! I look forward to seeing how they did that!

My hunch is there some crossed wires here and this is explaining a new D&D starter box set.

Wait... APRIL 8th!?

damn! Change in schedule if that is true! No more preprerelease at XP!

I think this is a likely evolution for DDM, they've moved to blisters for the new starter for SWM as well.

Hmm... if it is April they're changing the schedule - spring set has been march for three years now. If the fixed figs are good skirmish and RPG then hoorah - if they're a bunch of common humanoids then well, I guess I have to buy it for the maps.

Yes! I've been wanting a blister for a long time, most especially one with (from the looks of it) 4 useable PC's and a dragon. I hope they keep this up, a few pieces for $20 is cheaper than fantastic locations and some reapers (plus paint, plus time, plus effort) with a giveaway dice for people who always lose them, and also insist on not buying their own $1 d20.

Large Green sure isn't from the new set though. Hmmmm... if this is a DDM starter maybe it's something of a combined product with the Basic Game. Seems odd otherwise.

Okay, lots of weirdness here (dates, figs, rules). I look forward to Shoe or Lidda chiming in with some specifics for us.

Please.

Guys this sounds like the D&D starter set. The first one had Black and Regdar, second one had Lg Blue and a grey cloak ranger and it looks like the 3rd one will have a Lg Green and some other figs....

This is mainly for D&D and much less for DDM.

This isn't the D&D RPG starter, because that needs more figures. Rather, it's a D&D Minis product that has definite application to the RPG.

Starter game: Large Green vs Adventurers! It'd be a fun minis skirmish.

For the D&D Basic Game, you need to introduce the basics of the RPG, and thus you have a bunch of smaller monsters.

Cheers!

Maybe the merging of D&D and DDM gets closer (as 4e gets closer as well)...

Doom, doom, doom...

This is wild speculation, but bear with me.

My guess is that the starter is NOT being released at the same time as Dungeon of Dread boosters. I believe that Dungeon of Dread boosters are being released at the standard time (give or take around XP), and the starter is being released roughly a month later.

This allows the Limited Championship and DoD (Huh, same acronym as Desert of Desolation) prereleases/releases to be run using old rules. Then the starter (with new rule changes) is being released a little bit BEFORE the start of the Constructed Qualifier season (with the exception of the likely qualifier at XP).

Of course, like I said, wild speculation. But, it does make some logical sense.

Except, of course, both sets are given the same date in the catalogue. :)

If this is a DDM/Skirmish set, I'll be eager to see the Elf Warlock (hoping it's a CG mini). We're finally starting to see a return of viable 'blaster mages', and it's a trend I genuinely hope continues.

Well, I'd lean evil, as the warlock's an evil-only class in RP (at least I'm pretty sure.) I've seen neutral, but I've been confused, due to the fact that you need demon blood in you strong enough to eventually give you DR/cold iron. Though, having demon blood in you doesn't seem like it would make you evil. You could have cool inner battles with your evil side and end up good with chaotic tendencies :D Though then again, they did make the shield guardian LG only and tied to commander instead of spellcaster (I think, never used them, nor have I played against them.) And I'm pretty sure in RP they were true N, and you crafted them as a caster class. Though, again, never made one, never fought one, so I don't particularly know.

No, the Warlock must be Evil OR Chaotic.

So, LE, NE, CE, CN, CG are the possible alignments.

Cheers!

It is not safe to assume that the 'streamlined rules' are necessarily a large change to the actual skirmish rules; they may just be a stripped down set of rules for beginners that come with the starter.

Some rules changes to clean things up a little would be welcome, though, so I sort of hope there are some changes.

New maps are always nice. Dropping the number of included figs while the price remains constant is not.

Two sets with the acronym DoD. Methinks Shoe enjoys confusing people

Because, you know, it's not like there are ever typographical errors[/sarcasm]

Someone else pulled up info on DoD2 the other day. Two in a row with the same acronym - thats confusing!

And look, we already know five minis from the set....

This sounds pretty cool to me. Rather than complaining about the reduced number of figs in a starter, I look at it as getting 5 non-random figures (at least one of them equivalent to a Drag Queen rare) and a rule book for just $5 more than a Fantastic Locations book. Incredible deal, in my mind, since a typical Large Green Dragon seems to go for $15-20 by itself.

Huh. Desert of Desolation. Dungeon of Dread. What's next...Dragons of Doom? Is 2008 the year of DoD? Rather than abbreviations, it might be easier to start calling them "set 1", "set 8", "set 14", etc.
