#1. Snig in Hell: An Exercise in Fireballs by Jai

So, i had fully intended on running a new build, to include Unhallowed figs tonight. We ended up with 18 people playing on a Monday night and so i opted to try something more fun; as i wasn't worried too much about being paired with the same guys i play seriously against every week (even though i did get those pairings). I had been itching to play Octoskull, but needed someone that isn't only fire damage with Forgepriest floating around out there. I also, have been interested in Pit Fiend. With all these ideas floating around, i chose Pit Fiend, Flameskull x3, Snig the Axe, Goblin Skirmisher x3. 200/8 C4

Matchup 1 (win): Eddie Jr. - Chasme x4, Orc Warrior 199/5 C-
Map: Drow Outpost (we both brought it)
Side: A (my win, my choice)
I was finally on the upside as far as matchups go against Eddie, but i still had to pay attention. This matchup was pretty much a game of don't fail sleep with the Pit Fiend, and get more than 2 chasme per fireball. Right out of the gate, i sent flameskulls up the middle, with snig and crew the long way around for victory. He sent a chasme to deal with the snig posse, one chasme around to the far victory area (and move in behind the flameskulls, with the rest up the middle. Eddie's dice almost immediately went cold. The goblins occupied one chasme for 3 rounds. I quickly dropped two fireballs on the central two chasme, hitting each one once (SR). One skull was injured, so i sent him to kill the orc. He used one injured chasme to go after the skull, and proceeded to miss it for 3 straight rounds. He then moved one chasme around to drone my pit fiend along with the one already back there. I failed the second drone! Luckily, a flameskull was within movement, and i woke up the fiend, who then routed said chasme. I then flameskull whittled down while the pit fiend chased the others back to the middle, where I dropped another 2 fireballs, targetting 2 (hitting 1), and targetting 3 (hitting 2) ... one routed. After the pit fiend meleed another chasme, he conceded.

Matchup 2 (win): Ed Sr. (Chairman7w) - Lyrandar Skyfire Captain, Virtuous Charger, Frenzied Berserker, Bralani Eladrin, Wild Elf Warsinger, Timber Wolf, Elf Warrior 200/7 C3
Map: Drow Outpost (my win, my choice)
Side: A (my win, my choice)
I move into position to take out his tile grabbers, hopscotch fireball, and use Blasphemy. His silly wolf passed morale and then killed a flameskull that was hit by lyrandar. It never fireballed, i was sad. I then misplaced my pit fiend so that it couldn't reach the bralani across to hopefully full attack and force morale out of command. Thus far he is off guard and unsure what he wishes to do, for 3 rounds he sits back trying to come up with a plan, using bralani and lyrandar to drop my activations. Meanwhile, frenzy is burning up. I poorly choose to engage with pit fiend near the bridge where i loose init round 4 and his charger .... charges for 35 damage. I route her with two attacks from pit fiend. Luckily i am able to keep the berskerker from getting an attack that round (move 9 to make the attack). He bases instead, hoping for initiative. I finish the round with a hopscotch fireball sequence from two skulls that fail to harm bralani (save and resist), but hurt the lyrandar. I win init, take the AoO (which he rolls a 1) and am able to Blasphemy on his warsinger, berserker, and bralani. Bralani fails both, berserker is stunned, and singer fails both. Gobos kill the singer, his berskerker engages pit fiend and misses. Bralani unstuns, then next round stays paralyzed. Pit fiend and skulls end the berserkers pain, victory puts me over without needing to end the paralyzed bralani. His big mistake in this game was that he forgot the SR on the Bralani.Mine were simply movement based (yet again) and not using the proper attacks from gobos or flameskulls to deal with that wolf. Letting his charger get off that charge was careless as well ... i meant for him to use movement, getting two attacks with a second one missing, all the while letting me position so he couldn't reach with his berserker. It worked, just not as planned.

Matchup 3 (loss): Carl (Venport) - Storm Silverhand, Archmage, Graycloak Ranger x2, Timber Wolf x2, Xeph Warrior x2, Bat Familiar 197/8 C4 (might have had 3 Xephs)
Map: Drow Outpost (my win, my choice)
Side: B (his win, his choice)
I really, really didn't want to deal with those swords. I moved forward, keepign skulls hidden, and screening the pit fiend with gobos. Again, a wolf passed morale on the bridge. ARGH. He did a very good job of clearing fodder while trying to stay hidden, i did my best to do the same. I was able to fireball the cloaks with some creative maneuvering, but they both passed the save. I played the hopscotch fireball game again, clearing out the bat, a cloak, and injuring storm. I think round 4 he finally manuevered to sword my fiend, i answered by basing the archmage, near storm. With init, i could maybe get some hurt no that silly mage ... but, no, i fail init. I was able to remove storm from play and reduce him to a cloak 5 from morale and a archmage that needed 15 for morale when the fiend died. I was unable to roll that crit and force that morale, he won on vicotry (not needing to kill my last skull).

2-1 I had a good night. I played 3 good games, first with a favorable matchup, and last against a horrible matchup. I think i played better as the night went on, and am glad i did as the matchups were harder. Having 18 people on a Monday night was awesome, as had i not paired against *that* last band, i could have gone 3-0 with my fun band. It was great to see so many folks there, we had a wide array of fun bands mixed in with a handful of solid builds. I am looking forward to next week. Hopefully our numbers will be up, as we are playing an Epic 1000 format. I really want to see the different builds people come up with. It is hilarious when a 5 point timber wolf can earn you 50 pts of victory a round.

Matchup 1 (win): Eddie Jr. - Chasme x5, Orc Warrior 198/6 C-

Arent Chames 49 points? That would make that warband 248 points.

I wouldn't care. If someone what to play 5 Chasme in constructed, I'd let 'em...

It was 4, and a bit of a joke band built in response to our "lucky" prize pulls over the past month or two. Seems every time we'd win (we have a booster draft) we'd get a freakin' Chasme!!!

I kid you not (Venport and Jai can vouch). So after the last one, he said, "I'm running Quad Chasmes!!!" We all laughed cause we thought he was joking but damned if he didn't play it.

He went' 1-2, expectedly, and sadly, there's no "They did better than expected..." line or anything. They simply stank.

That's no joke. 4 rounds to kill a flameskull, 4 rounds to kill 4 gobos ...

Still they did better than i ... ok, maybe not
