#1. Caller in Darkness Confirmed? by Rakashaka

I impulse-shopped and bought Inquest 143. On Page 31 is a picture for "Caller in Darkness from Unhallowed" lumped with in some sort of Undead DDM article. This is the only new mini featured in the article from Unhallowed. Exciting! Caller in the Darkness is from the Expanded Psionics Handbook, so maybe some sort of Incorporeal, Psionic menace in Skirmish.
No, No Pics, I don't have a scanner, All the space in my trailer is taken up by this Meth lab (did I think that or type it?) You will have to turn to someone who isn't computer-inept, but I promise, the pic and fig is real.
Hopefully this isn't something everyone already knows..

Scans, someone, scans! Thanks for posting this; looking at its picture in Expanded Psionics Handbook, it suddenly seems like kind of a lock for tonight’s preview…

hey, doesn't that picture look kind of like the silhouette from last week's preview? maybe it isn't a giant owl... or a shrieker.

Very cool. It looks quite similar to a Gibbering Mouther...

Startlingly similar... looks like we may have finally figured out Shoe's Silhouette!

Great a Caller in Darkness and Rats a Caller in Darkness a little late.

I would like the mini but just ran an encounter in Ravenloft with one......Grrr I have to stop running these modules before the minis for them come out.

Nice find.

SWEET! I've always loved that illustration. If only the mini can do it justice.

Dan, if you can stop by the GP tomorrow, I'll bring my digital camera, and we can get them scans (pics) up!

Cool, I think Caller in Darkness is orginally from Dark Sun.

I will do so...If no one beats me to the punch (Hopefully for everyone here, someone else gets it before then..) My only stipulation is taking one picture also of my Apostle of Kyuss/ Purple Worm repaint, since I've been aching to post it for months and don't have a digi-camera (hence, no pics). I'll bring the Harbringer of Worms with me...

Nice find.

We did have some discussion of figs a while back, and I remember posting what I'd suspect stats for a Caller in Darkness would be - keep in mind that this guy is the reason for Van Richten to have his make manifest spell:

Caller in Darkness
CE
?? pts

Large Undead

Level: 9
Speed: F8
AC: 14
HP: 70

Melee Attack: +?? (5) (the listed attack bonus is +7, but it's an incorporeal touch attack, which has usually been bumped by as much as +10 on previous figures; likewise, the melee attack deals 2d6 damage, which could 'round' either to 5 or 10 damage)

Special Abilities
Flight
Incorporeal
Steal Essence (When this creature destroys a living enemy with its melee attack, it gains +10 HP)

SPELLS
Psionics 16pp-concussion blast 1pp (sight; 10 damage), ego whip 3pp (sight; Stun, DC 16), death urge 7pp (sight; affected creature immediately strikes itself for double damage with its highest-damage attack, DC 16 negates)

There are a lot of ways the designers could go, especially with the psi-like abilities (the number of power points in its psionic pool and the cost of its concussion blast are the two things most likely to be wrong in this prediction), but I think this would be a representative prototype.

I'm looking up the Caller in Darkness Right Now... and it could be mean. 70 hps. The psionic abilities of the creature are really strong when converted to the DDM game... Autodamage spells (no save) for 10, Spells that deal 35 damage (save for none - DC 16), Spells that force a target to autocrit itself... The steal essence ability could allow it to automatically kill helpless foes (even from a range 6 distance), making it a great ally with potential new undead that paralyze enemies.

This could be a run figure for DDM as a ranged spellcaster with direct damage and interesting abilities...

don't forget Incorporeal the bane of DDM, a 50% miss chance even spells. Barring Tordek, Dwarf Champion and things in unhallowed (like Von Richten's make manifest)

"Expedition to Castle Ravenloft" features a Caller in Darkness in it, and the stupid article (or maybe the price guide? I have a short attention span regarding Inquest) mentions using the mini in the module. An interesting thing of note is that in Wizards is tying the mini (ala Strahd) to the module, the psionics are slightly different in the module text, dumbed down if you will. For example Mind Thrust in the Expanded Psionics book is a Save for none spell, while the version under the Caller in the newer Ravenloft expedition is save for half. I think the earlier estimations are right on...
