So, i have joked about it. I have been tempted by it. I even wanted to grind with it (in a totally non-sexual way). So, finally, i did it. I played Octoskull (Flameskull x8) last night in our Monday Night League. And, oddly enough, I had my best showing ever ... i won 2 games in a single night!
1st Matchup (loss) - Dual Steel Predator, Timber Wolf, Dire Rat, Kobold Miner.
Map (Irrelevant): Drow Outpost.
Statistical Improbability. Had i been able to play keep away and manage to score victory every round, his fodder was only 9 points, so i would have had to get 200 VP (20 rounds) and hope he didn't kill any of my skulls *and* didn't get any VP. Ha! There is a spot that allowed me to fly two squares (just hop the pit) that would force his Pred to run all the way around (20 squares) and be 1 square away. Only to have me go back, and repeat the procedure.
2nd Matchup (win) - Orc Wolf Shaman, Fiendish Girallon x2, War Ape x2, Dire Bear, Gnoll.
Map: Drow Outpost.
He did a good job at spreading them out, but to be able to move and strike he had to keep them close enough that i was able to move in one flameskull, and then fireball it with another to hit all his guys with the radius. I managed to position myself strongly on the bridge so that i could control the amount of large figures he could bring to bear (haha) and i simply focused on his commander. It didn't route, but after enough fireballs, it did die ... and none of his figures passed morale after that. By hopscotching and shuffling back and forth (Conceal helped, but only a couple times), he didn't get to hit a skull more than once, so i didn't lose any figures. Game.
3rd Matchup (win) - Warpriest of Moradin, Slaughterstone Eviscerator x2, Xorn x3, Hill Dwarf Warrior, Man-at-Arms.
Map: Drow Outpost.
Again, positioning figures to block his large figs was key, as it kept them from hitting more than one skull. Why the Xorns would burrow, they still had to go around the ravine (pit), so i used that to my advantage when hunting his commander. Each SSE was occupied by a skull at almost all times (in fact, 1 round neither skull was hit due to low attacks + conceal - 8 attacks), and while his commander passed Morale, he did eventually succumb to fireballs. Pop. Then it became a game of kill the Hill Dwarf (the MaA died int he first Fireball) and keep 3 skulls alive while grabbing 4 more rounds of tile points (stupid immune fire xorns). The Xorns were a nuisance, but their Earthbound made it difficult for them to hit me, and when they did, i still had Conceal. The last 3 rounds were quick (him moving and attacking and me running), but after a total of 8 rounds, i won on VP (60-40) with 4 skulls alive vs. his 3 Xorns.
I have been wondering for awhile if i am a decent player (cause i always play goofy bands, and i only ever win 1 in 3- or worse), but i think i feel confident that i at least have a clue now
. Not only did i bring a silly band (more so than normal), but i won against bands that had good chances at trouncing me. I was honestly expecting to see a GAS band. I was hoping that the sheer number of fireballs would simply ruin their day. Oddly enough, none showed. My fear was Belchers, but none showed. We did have 2 couatl bands that i honestly wasn't sure i could out manuever, and i was curious to find out. I didn't get the chance, however, as they both won game 1, which i lost.
Yes, i know, this is way too serious a write up for Octoskull. And that is exactly why i wrote it up. I don't think i have heard of anybody actually playing it. People talk, but i heard no results. As is always stated, fire immune *bands* will always trump me. Nothing can be done. Statistically i cannot keep them from killing me *and* still manage to gain more victory then them. Bands with fire immune creatures, or fire resist creatures on the other hand, don't have the luxury of an easy kill.
